I've been hearing great things about this book and was hoping it would live up to my expectations. And it did.
The characters in this story were real, and fully-fleshed out, making the story interesting and horrifying. The funny thing is, despite the fact that there is a terrifying, disgusting man who made my skin crawl, he wasn't even the only part that had me eagerly turning pages, waiting to find out what happens/what he does. I also couldn't wait to find out what happened with a little girl, a husband and wife and the woman who wanted to come between them, a lonely man who tried to do what was right, and a terrified little boy. And the fact that that was as interesting and captivating as a scary man who bullies, hurts and almost kills his family probably every day of their lives says something about the characters and the story that drew me in.
