At Home: A Short History of Private Life - Bill Bryson

This was a really interesting read! I learned all kinds of facts about many topics I knew very little about. Bill Bryson goes into an incredible amount of detail in this book about the home and everything to do with it.

There's a fountain of information on many things of the past, including servants, medicine, children, architecture, the discovery of electricity and countless other topics. Although I found it a bit hard to get into for the first couple of chapters, later on I couldn't put it down.

This book really made me appreciate the comforts that I'm lucky enough to take for granted every day of my life. I can't imagine working 14 hour days, having no heat and electricity (much less no internet!), having no running water, constantly worrying about disease and where my next meal is coming from and finishing the day on a bed made of straw, sawdust or old rags.
